More and more authors are turning to self publishing establishments rather than wait endless months to know if an agent or publishing house is going to accept them. Last year, according to Bowker, more than 1,000,000 (yes I want you to see that number) books were published with the greatest percentage of them coming from self-publishers. And that trend doesn't show any sign of letting up.
Still, the majority of those books didn't even sell 500 copies, which tells me we have a lot of authors joining our ranks, but very few who know how to get attention for their books. It may also speak to the fact that just because there are many books being published, not all of them are worth the paper they are printed on. I'm sure more figures will be released soon.
